HISTORY OF CHATHAM VILLAGE – September 17, 2025
HISTORY OF CHATHAM VILLAGE
One of Pittsburgh’s Best Kept Secrets, Chatham Village, is a 216-unit housing complex, located on 45 acres on Mt. Washington. The hilly site considered by many to be unbuildable was constructed in two phases between 1932 & 1936.
This planned community, built on a Pedestrian model, where vehicles are distributed around village’s perimeter, preserving the central grounds for gardens and landscaping that residents continue to enjoy throughout the year.
Designated a National Historical Landmark in 2005, Chatham Village is an exemplary example of the Garden City for the past 90 years. The American Planning Association has selected the Chatham Village neighborhood as one of 10 Great Neighborhoods in America for its innovative design, livability, and sustainability.
