April 17, 2024 – Discovering a Family History: From the Famous and Heroic to the Infamous and Notorious
Family History: From the Famous and Heroic to the Infamous and Notorious
Back in 2019 Carleton Young provided a program for ACRA about the large collection of letters from two Civil War soldiers that he had found in his family attic. In order to find his family connection to the two soldiers, he began an extensive research of his own family history. Through that process, he was surprised to discover that he was related to many famous people such as Teddy Roosevelt, Ulysses S. Grant, Paul Revere and many others that he had been teaching about in his own history classes for so many years. He also found that along with the famous, there were family connections to a few infamous rogues and murderers as well.
Carleton Young has undergraduate degrees in economics and English from Westminster College and Point Park University, an MA in history from Ohio University, and his PhD in the history of education from the University of Pittsburgh. For 37 years he taught AP American history at Thomas Jefferson High School in Pittsburgh. He has also taught classes as an adjunct professor at the Community College of Allegheny County, the University of Pittsburgh, Eastern Gateway Community College, and in the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
